KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Luke Clemens rushed for a season-high 160 yards and three touchdowns Saturday, leading Miami of Ohio to a 42-21 victory over Western Michigan and within one win of its second consecutive Mid-American Conference East championship.
The RedHawks (7-3, 6-1 Mid-American) play Akron (6-4, 6-1) for the East title next Saturday in Akron. The winner will play the MAC West champion for the league title Dec. 2 at Ford Field in Detroit.
Clemens scored all his touchdowns in the first half. His 2-yard scoring run with 2:04 left in the second quarter gave Miami a 21-7 lead.
The Broncos (1-9, 0-7), losing a ninth consecutive game for the first time since 1996, never got within two touchdowns after that. Western Michigan wide receiver Greg Jennings caught a game-high eight passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns, including a 46-yard scoring pass from Blayne Baggett.
Miami, winning its fifth consecutive game, piled up 552 yards of total offense, including 349 through the air. Quarterback Josh Betts completed 23-of-33 passes for two touchdowns, and was intercepted just once. It was his second 300-yard game of the season.
Miami receiver Michael Larkin broke a league record, and tied an NCAA record, by catching a pass in his 47th consecutive game. He led the RedHawks with five receptions for 78 yards.
The RedHawks outrushed the Broncos, 203-57, holding an opponent under 100 yards rushing for the sixth time this season.
