Volleyball Drops Four-Game Match At Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio--Playing the program's 1000th match, Miami University's volleyball squad suffered a four game loss at Toledo, 22-30, 30-27, 19-30 and 25-30. Miami falls to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in Mid-American Conference action, while Toledo improves to 13-5 overall and 3-4 in MAC play.
With help from a kill by freshman middle hitter Carli Reihman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), Miami opened up a 3-1 lead early in the first game. The Rockets took a 6-4 advantage off a pair of kills and never looked back. Toledo was able to extend its lead to four, 15-11, but a pair of kills from redshirt freshman Kate Norris (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and a kill by Reihman pulled the RedHawks within one, 15-16. Eventually the Rockets posted a six-point lead, 23-17, and rolled to the 30-22 Game One win from there. Toledo hit a scorching .513 for the game, connecting on 21-of-39 attempts while making just one hitting error.
Toledo led by as many as four early in the second game, 16-12, but a kill by freshman outside hitter Jeanna Staun (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and back-to-back service aces from Reihman knotted the game, 16-16. Again, the Rockets built a slight cushion, leading by as many as two points. Miami tied the game at 20-20, 21-21, 23-23, 24-24 and 25-25, before taking the lead for good off a kill by senior outside hitter Tara Buroker (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton). A block by Norris and senior outside hitter Angie Zent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) handed the RedHawks a 29-26 advantage. Toledo came back with a kill, but Norris iced the second game with a kill to give the RedHawks the 30-27 win in the second game.
In the third game, Miami led by as many as four, posting a 10-6 lead off a Reihman kill. Toledo, however, went on a 4-0 run to knot the game, 10-10. The teams went back and forth until the Rockets went on a 10-2 run to post a 25-17 lead. Miami could only muster two more points through the remainder of the set as Toledo claimed the third game, 30-19.
Aided by a block by Zent/Reihman and a Reihman solo block, Miami took a 4-1 lead early in the fourth game. A pair of kills pulled the Rockets pulled Toledo within one, 3-4, but Miami went on a 6-1 run off a pair of blocks by Zent/and sophomore middle hitter Lauren Slusser (Columbus Grove, Ohio/Columbus Grove) and a Zent kill to take a 10-5 lead. Toledo came back to knot the game, 13-13. The teams battled back and forth from there. After a 25-25 tie, Toledo rattled off five unanswered points to capture the match with a 30-25 Game Four win.
For the RedHawks, Buroker tallied a match-high 15 kills, while Norris added 10 kills for the RedHawks. Zent posted a match-best seven blocks, and freshman libero Sydney Antonio (Holland, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) added 13 digs.
Miami returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they face Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich. Match time is 7 p.m.
