OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) has qualified for the 2003 NCAA Championships, the NCAA announced late Monday. Kremer earned an individual automatic bid via her sixth-place finish at last week's NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
The top four finishers from each of the nine regionals, whose teams were not selected to the NCAA Championships, earned automatic bids, with an additional two runners being awarded at-large berths to the national meet. While no Mid-American Conference teams qualified for the national meet, Kremer will be joined by Toledo's Chris Tye. Tye finished 19th at the regional meet and was one of the region's four automatic qualifiers.
Kremer finished sixth at the Great Lakes Regional, crossing the line in 20:46 and earning all-region honors. Her time eclipsed her own school record in a 6K race, which she set on the same course at the 2001 regional. This is the second time Kremer has qualified for the NCAA Championships after earning All-America honors as a sophomore with a 25th-place finish.
This season, Kremer has won four races, including the MAC Championship, posted a pair of second-place finishes and was named MAC Runner of the Week an unprecedented six times, one for each meet she competed in this season. Kremer also was named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week three times and earned Academic All-MAC honors.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for Monday, Nov. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa. Northern Iowa is the event's host school, with the women's race begining at 12:15 p.m. CST. The men's event precedes the women's at 11 a.m. and features Miami's men's cross country team, an at-large qualifier after its sixth-place finish at the regionals.
