Head coach Richard Ceronie is pleased to announce the addition of four athletes who have signed national letters of intent to become part of the cross country & track family. Ceronie credits the excellent early signing class to the strong efforts of recruiting coordinator Jennifer Hardesty and assistant recruiting coordinator Chris Bostwick.
"Our assistant coaches set out to improve select areas on our team and this early signing class has done just that," Ceronie said. "It gives us an excellent start to the 2003-04 freshman class. We anticipate signing one or two more distance runners, a hurdler, and a vaulter during the regular signing period."
Amy Renner (Huron, OH/Huron) was sixth in the 2002 Ohio Girls State Cross Country Meet and runner-up in last years state track meet in the one mile. Renner has one of the top returning high school times in the state this year.
"I really liked the way that Amy competed in the state track meet last year," said Ceronie. "She isn't afraid to take the lead and push the pace, and that is critical at the Division I level. I think she will have an immediate impact on both our cross country and track teams"
LaShonda Davis (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) was forth at last years Indiana state high school championships in the long jump (18' 9 1/2") and had one of Indiana's top times in the 100- (12.27) and 200-meters (25.55).
"LaShonda is an excellent long jumper/sprinter, which is an area that our team needed to strengthen," said Ceronie. "We anticipate that she will compete in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 4 x 100 and long jump for us."
LaTonya Anderson (Milford, VA/Caroline) is one of Virginia's top all-around athletes. Anderson won three state titles in last years Virginia state meet. Anderson won the state long jump title (19' 1/2") and the state 400-meter title (56.38) last season.
"LaTonya has done just about everything for her high school team, which includes running cross country, pole vaulting, and sprinting/long jumping," said Ceronie. "We are plan on her jumping and sprinting but she may be able to move into the heptathlon with her all around skills."
Kim Horning (Granville, OH/Granville) was an Ohio State Champion last year in the long jump. Horning's winning jump totaled 18' 6" along with topping the state in the 400-meters (58.5). Horning has also been on several state championship relay teams.
"Kim is an excellent all-around athlete and will bring great versatility to our team," said Ceronie. "She will strengthen our sprinting and jumping events, plus has great potential in the triple jump, an event that Ohio high schools does not offer."
