Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller Over Butler, 1-0

Oct. 11, 2002

INDIANAPOLIS-Battling a streaking Butler University team that entered the day on a five-match winning streak, Miami put forth another strong defensive effort and picked up its 10th win of the season on an overtime goal by senior forward Danielle Berkemeier.

Berkemeier, who had missed a potential game-winner in the final 15 seconds of regulation, didn't misfire a second time, scoring a one-touch goal in the 98th minute to guarantee the Red and White its fourth consecutive 10-win season. The goal was set up by the passing of sophomore Ashley Swinehart, who broke through the Bulldog midfield on the play, and senior Andrea Cunningham, who took Swinehart's cross kick and sent a sharp pass to Berkemeier for the gamewinner.

Freshman Leigh Terry picked up her fourth shutout of the season in net, making five saves while keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the first time this season. Miami held a narrow 5-4 edge in shots after an even first half but opened up its attack up in the second by outshooting the Bulldogs 9-3. Butler had taken the first two shots in the overtime period before Berkemeier ended the match wih her score at 97:20.

The RedHawks (10-2-1, 7-1-0 MAC) head back to Indiana Sunday when they travel to Muncie, Ind., for a 1 p.m. kickoff with Ball State University. The winner of the match will claim first place in the MAC Standings.
