Volleyball Team Defeats Denver; Loses To Tennessee at Miami Classic

Tennessee junior Stephanie Knight earned tournament MVP honors, while teammates junior Erica Lear and sophomore Janelle Hester garnered all-tournament team accolades. From Miami, sophomore Jennifer Eaton, who led the RedHawks in all four matches, and junior Mindy Clark were decorated with all-tournament team honors. TCU senior Amy Atamanczuk and Denver junior Kellie Savage also were named to the all-tournament team.
Following are match recaps from Saturday:
MATCH 1: Miami 3, Denver 0
After a thrilling five-game win over TCU on Friday night at the Miami-JustBalls.com Classic, the Miami volleyball team continued its winning ways, downing Denver in three games on Saturday morning.
The RedHawks opened up the match with a 15-11 triumph and then inched out a 16-14 win in the second game. Miami posted a come-from-behind 15-9 win in the third game to win the match and improve its record to 2-0. Denver drops to 0-2.
Eaton again led the 'Hawks with 15 kills and four blocks, while freshman Amy Doran continued her assault from the service line, dishing out three aces for the second-consecutive match. Sophomore Erika Eagan notched nine kills and three service aces.
Savage recorded 15 kills for the Pioneers. Senior Sarah Kaye added 10 kills and 10 digs.
MATCH 2: Tennessee 3, TCU 2
TCU battled Tennessee five games with the Lady Vols prevailing by a small margin in the deciding game, 15-13.
Tennessee opened the match with a 15-10 win. TCU answered in the second game, winning 15-13. The Lady Vols put together a 15-5 win in the third game, but TCU reciprocated with a 15-9 win to tie the match, 2-2, before dropping the fifth game.
Knight paced Tennessee with 25 kills and three blocks, while senior Ariana Wilson amassed 20 kills and four blocks. Lear tallied 70 assists.
For TCU, Atamanczuk compiled 20 kills and junior Marci King recorded 11 kills and 10 digs.
MATCH 3: TCU 3, Denver 1
TCU picked up its first win of the season, defeating Denver, 15-12, 11-15, 15-13 and 15-7.
Atamanczuk again sparked the Horned Frogs with 19 kills, 12 digs and four service aces. Senior Bethany Toce added 12 kills.
The Pioneers had three players in double figures for kills, led by Savage's 20. Kaye produced an 11-kill, 16-dig performance, while sophomore Julie Crockett added 11 kills and four service aces.
MATCH 4: Tennessee 3, Miami 0
Tennessee captured the Miami-JustBalls.com Classic title with a 15-8, 15-4, 16-14 win over Miami.
Wilson led the Lady Vols with 18 kills, followed by Hester with 16 and Knight with 14. Junior Lee Ann Karr tallied a team-best 11 kills for Miami, and Eaton notched 12 digs.
