Miami Volleyball Tops Sam Houston State; Loses to Rutgers

The Bearkats owned a 10-2 advantage in the first game, but Miami crept back to within one, scoring seven unanswered points. McCullough highlighted that run, crushing three kills and a block. Sam Houston State, however, outscored the RedHawks 5-1 to take game one, 15-10.
Game two was all Miami as the RedHawks unleashed three service aces en route to a 15-4 win. Miami posted a 4-3 edge before rattling off nine unanswered points to increase its lead, 13-3. Sam Houston State put one more point on the board on a block. McCullough nailed a kill for the sideout and freshman Jessica Rayburg quickly responded to the Bearkat point by serving up an ace. An SHSU attack error gave Miami is final point of the game.
The RedHawks pulled out to a 5-2 lead in game three, but the Bearkats chipped away at the Miami defense, posting a 15-6 win over Miami.
A see-saw battle was scripted over the first 34 services of game four, with Miami holing only a 6-5 edge. The RedHawks went one to scored nine unanswered points to win game four, 15-5, and send the match into rally scoring-the fourth time in 10 outings the RedHawks have been in rally scoring.
The RedHawks owned an 11-5 lead in the fifth game, but the Bearkats inched their way back, tying the game, 12-12, and then taking the 13-12 lead. A kill by McCullough again evened the score at 13-13. A Miami kill gave the Red and White the 14-13 advantage, and a block by freshman Susan Poll iced the match for Miami.
Mindy Clark recorded a match-best 19 digs, and Summer Clouse added 33 assists, 10 digs and three service aces. Lee Ann Karr posted 14 kills, while Sara Uehlin amassed 10 digs. Poll notched 11 kills.
Miami dropped its morning contest in three games to Rutgers, 6-15, 5-15 and 7-15.
Susan Poll notched a match-best eight kills at a .308 efficiency. At the net, Kelly McCullough posted three blocks and six kills. Lee Ann Karr added six kills and six digs, while Erika Eagan recorded two service aces.
The RedHawks have the week off before opening their MAC season at home against Western Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday.
