The RedHawks were paced by Erika Eagan and Kelly McCullough, who notched eight kills apiece. Sara Uehlin and Amy Pfohl each recorded two service aces.
On a block by Jessica Rayburg and McCullough and a service ace by Mindy Clark, Miami jumped out to a 5-3 in the early stages of the first game. That, however, would be the only lead for the RedHawks in the first game. In addition to Clark's ace, Uehlin served up an ace to pull Miami to within one, 2-3, while Summer Clouse added an ace in the later part of the first game, to make the score 7-10 in favor of the Cardinals.
Pfohl and Jennifer Eaton teamed up on the block to tie the second game, 1-1. The Cardinals rattled off five-straight points and seven unanswered points before Eaton notched a kill to give Miami back the serve. Uehlin promptly served up an ace for the RedHawks. A kill by Rayburg placed the score at 3-8 in favor of BSU. After Miami scored its fourth point, Ball State posted five-straight points, three off Miami attack errors, to extend its lead, 14-4. A kill by Lee Ann Karr halted the BSU run, and a block by Susan Poll and Eagan gave the RedHawks their fifth point of the game. Ball State reclaimed the serve and won the second game, 15-5, on a Miami attack error.
Game three was very tight in the early stages. Miami opened up a 3-0 lead with the help of two Ball State attack errors and a McCullough kill. BSU came back to tie the match, 3-3. The two teams traded 11 serves before Miami received its fourth point on a BSU attack error. After regaining the serve, the Cardinals went on to rattle off 10 unanswered points to take a 13-4 lead. Miami posted its fifth point, but BSU knocked down a kill to put the contest at match point. The teams traded six more side outs before the Cardinals iced the match with a 5-15 win.
Miami hosts Akron at 7 p.m. Friday and faces Buffalo at 3 p.m. Sunday in Buffalo, N.Y.
