Miami kept the first game close in the early stages, battling to a 4-4 tie. Ball State, however, registered 10 unanswered points to take the 14-4 lead. With game-point on the line, the RedHawks managed to win back the serve on an Amy Pfohl kill and post two additional points on kills by Jessica Rayburg and Lee Ann Karr. A kill by BSU's Julie Zylka gave the Cardinals the serve and a service ace by Megan Hammons won the first game for Ball State, 15-6.
Game two was a back and forth battle for most of the game. Ball State held an 8-7 advantage at the midway point, and then pulled out to a 12-8 edge. Capped by a Robyn Byrnes service ace, Miami inched its way back into the game, closing the gap to within one, 11-12. Susie Meshberger teamed up with Nikki Allen and Jenna Foster on blocks to post BSU's next two points. Meshberger then posted the game-winning point on a kill.
In the third game, Ball State jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Four kills by Pfohl and a service ace by Kelly McCullough helped Miami battled back to within two, 10-12. Two straight Ball State service aces by Meredith Fancher gave the Cardinals the 14-10 lead. The RedHawks were able to put one more point on the board before Ball State received its final point on a Miami attack error to capture the third game, 15-11.
For Miami, Pfohl recorded a career-high 13 kills and nine digs. McCullough notched 12 kills and five blocks, and Karr posted 11 kills and nine digs.
Miami begins a five-match road stretch this weekend. The RedHawks face Toledo at 7 p.m. Friday and Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. Saturday.
