Four Miami Field Hockey Athletes Named To National Academic Team

OXFORD, OHIO -- Seniors Courtney Seyferth (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Whitney Wall (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central), junior Karen Preikszas (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) and sophomore Beth Young (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley C.D.) have been named to the 1999 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Squad. A student-athlete must possess a minimum grade point average of 3.30, be a starter or a key reserve, and be in at least her second season of competition to be selected to the squad.
Seyferth finished the season as the RedHawks' leading scorer with 20 points and was second on the team in goals scored (7) and assists (6). Seyferth was also named the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 25 as she holds a 3.37 GPA in health appraisal and sport organization.
Wall, in her first season as a starter for Miami, scored a career-high three goals and added one assist on the year. Wall is majoring in elementary education and has a 3.33 GPA.
Preikszas started all nineteen games at back for the RedHawks and was second on the team in defensive saves with seven. Preikszas has a 3.48 GPA and is majoring in family studies.
Young, who holds a team-high 3.84 GPA with a political science major, was named to the all-MAC second team this year after leading the RedHawks in goals scored with nine. Young was second on the team in scoring and had two game-winning goals for the year.
