Erich (Miami '15, '16) started his performance coaching with the Miami ice hockey team as a grad student. During his year with the team, he learned the value of monitoring athletes in season to maximize in game performance while minimizing the risk of injury due to over training or excess fatigue. His thesis was to create an algorithm used by the coaches early in the season to predict in game performance based on the extensive preseason testing protocol.
Upon graduating, he began working with the field hockey team in January of 2017 as a sports performance consultant. His role has evolved with the team over the years but has always centered around providing daily and weekly feedback to the coaches and athletes in an effort to monitor training progress and avoid excess fatigue, especially during the season.
During the three years that Erich has been with the team, Miami has won three consecutive MAC regular season and tournament championships. They have advanced to the NCAA Tournament each of these years and made it through the opening round two of the three years. During this time, the number of reported injuries has decreased each year in part to the coaches and athletes’ reliance on the feedback provided.
