In his first year guiding the RedHawks, Gwitt led Miami to a 60% increase in wins while driving significant program enhancements. In Miami’s second season under his direction, the program completed a new state-of-the-art locker room and lounge, purchased a custom Taraflex training and match floor and embarked on an international training trip to Italy and Greece.
The 2025 season marked a breakthrough for the program, as Miami set a program attendance record and won 220% more matches than the season before the current staff arrived. The RedHawks posted their best overall and conference start since 2020, finished with 16 wins (their first 15+ win campaign since 2019) and returned to the MAC Tournament for the first time in five seasons. Miami also led the MAC in blocking and celebrated several standout individual honors, including:
Â
- Two MAC Defensive Player of the Week awards
- One MAC Setter Pair of the Week recognition
- Two All-MAC Second Team selections
- One MAC All-Freshman Team honoree
These achievements reflect the accelerated momentum Gwitt has brought to Oxford and his commitment to elevating the RedHawks on every front.
Before Miami, Gwitt spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Penn State, his alma mater, where he helped lead the Nittany Lions to back-to-back NCAA Sweet 16 appearances in 2022 and 2023. During his tenure, Penn State signed consecutive top-10 recruiting classes, including the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit, and produced seven All-Big Ten selections and two AVCA All-Americans.
Gwitt’s earlier collegiate career includes four seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana, where he helped secure the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history and coached the Hoosiers to dramatic defensive improvement. He began his coaching career at Centenary College, where he became the youngest Division I head coach in the nation at age 22.
A native of Eden, New York, Gwitt graduated from Penn State in 2007. As a member of the Nittany Lion men’s volleyball team under head coach Mark Pavlik, he helped PSU capture the EIVA Championship and reach the NCAA Final Four.
Now leading Miami Volleyball into its next chapter, Gwitt remains dedicated to advancing the program’s tradition of excellence, developing high-character athletes and returning the RedHawks to national prominence.
