Pat Welsh begins his third year as Miami's offensive coordinator and will be in year two of coaching running backs. He has been with the RedHawks since 2014.

Welsh's offense was outstanding in his first year at the helm. Miami's balanced offensive attack averaged over 25 points per contest in 2023. Miami had it's first 1,000 yard rusher since 2005 and had a receiver lead the MAC in yards. Quarterback Brett Gabbert, despite missing the last six games of the season, earned third-team All-MAC and was leading the conference in passing yards and touchdowns before his season-ending injury. Miami scored over 30 points five different times, including 31 in a win over Cincinnati and 30 in a victory at Ohio.

This past season, Miami's offensive was arguably the most explosive since Martin's arrival. The RedHawks led the MAC in yards per play (6.8) and averaged 30.4 points during conference play. The RedHawks also produced a 1,000-yard rusher for the second straight season and five different offensive players earned All-MAC honors in 2024.

Welsh has established himself as both an outstanding position coach and recruiter. According to Rivals.com, Miami's recruiting classes have ranked first or second in seven of the past nine seasons.

Welsh has also helped produce NFL talent. After the 2017 season Ryan Smith signed a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers. Smith finished his Miami career with 92 catches for 1,149 receiving yards. A year later Nate Becker joined Smith in the NFL, agreeing to terms with the Buffalo Bills.

Prior to arriving at Miami, Welsh spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame. While with the Irish he worked with the offensive line.

Welsh also spent time at Wittenberg (Ohio) College in 2011 and with Grand Valley State's football program from 2008-10.

In 2011, Welsh served as quarterbacks coach at Wittenberg. With the Tigers, Welsh helped Ben Zoeller earn North Coast Athletic Conference offensive player of the year honors after Zoeller led the NCAC with 2,651 passing yards and 265.1 passing yards per game. Wittenberg was 8-2 in 2011 and finished second in the NCAC with a 5-1 record.

Welsh served as a defensive assistant for the Lakers in 2010 and helped Grand Valley State's defense hold opponents to 19.2 points per game. The Lakers were 11-2 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Welsh assisted with coaching the Grand Valley State defensive backs and also doubled as the Lakers video coordinator.

A 2010 graduate of Grand Valley State with a degree in physical education and an emphasis in sports leadership, Welsh worked as a student assistant with the football team in 2008 and 2009.

Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., Welsh is a native of Whitehall, Mich. He and his wife Jacqueline were married in May 2012. They have two kids (PJ, 6 and Lauren, 3).
