Â
All-time series
The Bearcats hold the slimmest of margins in the Battle for the Victory Bell series, leading 60-59-7. The series history dates back to 1888 with the first college football game ever played in the state of Ohio. Miami is looking for its first victory over the Bearcats since 2005 and first win at Nippert Stadium since 2002.
Â
Last meeting
After Miami grabbed an early 10-0 lead, Cincinnati went on top for good just before halftime and pulled away for a 38-17 win over the RedHawks last September at Paycor Stadium in downtown Cincinnati. Aveon Smith threw two touchdown passes in the first half for Miami, while Ryan McWood made a game-high 13 tackles.
Â
Memorable meeting
Ben Roethlisberger threw for 377 yards as Miami jumped out to a 28-0 advantage and held on to edge Cincinnati 42-37 in front of a sellout crowd at Yager Stadium on Sept. 27, 2003. The RedHawks captured the Victory Bell for the third straight season and Roethlisberger became the first quarterback in program history to amass three consecutive 300-yard passing games. The Bearcats cut a 25-point fourth-quarter deficit to a single possession down the stretch, but their fifth turnover of the game (a fumbled punt in the final minute) sealed the outcome for the Red and White.
Â
Last year's Bearcats
UC followed up its 2021 College Football Playoff appearance with a 9-4 record in 2022. Cincinnati went 6-2 in conference play but saw its 32-game home win streak snapped in the regular-season finale vs. Tulane. The Bearcats closed the campaign with a 24-7 loss to Louisville in December's Fenway Bowl, less than two weeks after hiring away Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield (although Satterfield didn't coach either team in the bowl game).
Â
People to know
Scott Satterfield, head coach
Satterfield enters his first season at the helm in Cincinnati after former coach Luke Fickell accepted the Wisconsin head coaching job in November 2022. Satterfield comes to the Bearcats from Louisville after beginning his coaching career at Appalachian State (his alma mater). He is 76-48 in 10 years as a head coach, including winning Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons in two different conferences (Sun Belt in 2018, ACC in 2019).
Â
Dontay Corleone, defensive lineman (jersey # 2)
Corleone earned All-America recognition from multiple outlets in 2022 and was the highest-rated defensive player in the nation by Pro Football Focus. He made 45 tackles for UC last season, including 5.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Corleone also forced two fumbles and recovered two fumbles on the year.
Â
Mason Fletcher, punter (jersey # 31)
Fletcher, chosen a Preseason All-American by both Phil Steele and Athlon Sports, was named AAC Special Teams Player of the Year in 2022. His 46.2-yard average ranked fourth in the country and included a 67-yard boot against the RedHawks last September. Fletcher set a program and conference record with an 84-yard punt the following month in a win at SMU, finishing the year with 14 punts of 50 or more yards and 29 punts inside the 20.

Numbers to know
4: The Bearcats will be part of their fourth conference in the last 20 years after officially joining the Big 12 in July. Cincinnati spent the previous 11 seasons in the American Athletic Conference after having competed in the (old) Big East from 2005-2012 and Conference USA before that.
Â
6: Of the 14 wide receivers listed on the Bearcats' roster, a half dozen are incoming transfers, including two that played for Satterfield at Louisville (Braden Smith and Dee Wiggins). Xzavier Henderson (who led Florida in catches in 2022), Aaron Turner (UConn's leading receiver last season), Donovan Ollie (Washington State) and Sterling Berkhalter (North Carolina A&T) are also among the newcomers.
Â
78: Miami and UC have faced each other every season for the past 78 years with the exception of 2020. Before the COVID pandemic, the last year without a Miami-Cincinnati football game came during World War II (1944).
