Football Team, Maier Named Miami Athletes of Week

For their performances last week, the Miami football team and Nicole Maier have been named Miami's Athletes of the Week, presented by Skyline Chili for the week of December 4.

Male Winners: Football Team
The RedHawks defeated No. 23 Toledo 23-14 at Ford Field Saturday to claim Miami Football's 17th Mid-American Conference championship. Aveon Smith was named the Offensive Player of the Game, finishing with 109 passing yards and 99 rushing yards (after a kneel-down on the final play). Rashad Amos added two touchdowns on the ground. Matt Salopek (nine tackles) earned Defensive Player of the Game honors, as Miami held the Rockets to 14 points (three touchdowns below their scoring average for the year). Graham Nicholson went 3-for-4 on field goals to tie Sam Sloman's record for made field goals in a season (26) and was selected Special Teams Player of the Game. Austin Ertl blocked a pair of field goals and Alec Bevelhimer placed four punts inside the 20-yard line. Miami snapped UT's 11-game winning streak and defeated a nationally-ranked team for the first time since 2012.
Female Winner: Nicole Maier
Nicole Maier set a program record in the 100 freestyle (47.97) to highlight her impressive total of eight first-place finishes in last weekend's Miami Invitational. Maier also won the 500 freestyle (4:46.46) and 400 IM (4:11.28) and helped the RedHawks to five relay victories (200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay, 800 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay). The Miami women's swimming and diving team claimed first place in the nine-team field with a total of 1172.5 points over the three-day event. Maier, a native of Bottrop Germany, is a senior Professional Writing major in the College of Arts and Science.
