Miami University head coach of men's and women's swimming and diving Hollie Bonewit-Cron announced the addition of Sean Schimmel to her staff today. Schimmel will serve as an assistant swimming coach for the RedHawks' program.
"Sean's decades of experience have made him a highly sought-after coach that I am excited to bring on board to Miami. His understanding of the mental and physical side of training is impressive and his innovative approach will help our student-athletes succeed in all areas at Miami, in the Mid-American Conference, the NCAA Championships and beyond," Bonewit-Cron said. "Sean will contribute to all aspects within our program and I am looking forward to working with him!"
Schimmel served as the head women's swimming and diving coach at the University of Arkansas from 2012-2016, where his student-athletes produced 13 All-American honors and 57 Honorable Mention All-American performances. The Razorbacks finished 26th in the country in 2013 and 44th in the nation in 2015 under Schimmel's leadership, posting a cumulative GPA of 3.54 over his time in Fayetteville, Ark.
Before that, Schimmel led the University of Maryland's men's and women's swimming and diving teams as head coach from 2008-2012, producing a pair of top-25 team finishes (25th in 2010, 22nd in 2011). The Terrapins set 56 school records on the women's side and 25 men's records over his tenure and earned four All-American honors to go with 20 Honorable Mention All-American nods.
Schimmel's previous stops included serving as associate head coach for the LSU men's and women's teams from 2006-08 and working as an assistant coach with the Harvard men from 1999-2006.
Most recently, Schimmel was the ABSC Pro Dawgs associate head coach as well as the volunteer assistant coach at the University of Georgia from 2016-2022, where he was a part of helping six individuals qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic team, with five of those athletes bringing home medals.
Schimmel's other coaching positions include Cali Condors assistant coach (2020-2022) and Team USA Lead Coach for the 2019 FINA Champions Series in Budapest, Hungary (2019).
Schimmel swam for the University of Southern California during his time in college and participated in the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1988 in both the 100 and 200 butterfly. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Communication from USC in 1992.
"I am excited that life presented me with this opportunity and grateful to Hollie for bringing me on board with the RedHawks. Hollie has created a championship culture and I am looking forward to being a part of that vision and doing my part to help make it happen while working with her, Noah, Kile, Travis, and all the student-athletes," said Schimmel. "It's great to be here, the entire team has been extremely welcoming so far and I am looking forward to what the future holds for all of us."
