EVANSTON, Ill.— Graham Nicholson made a 36-yard field goal with 21 seconds left and the Miami University football team rallied for a 17-14 win at Northwestern Saturday night.

Keyon Mozee rushed 21 times for a career-high 171 yards to lead the RedHawks' offensive attack. Aveon Smith threw for one score and ran for another to help Miami move to 2-2 on the year. Northwestern drops to 1-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Northwestern got on the board first, finishing off a 12-play drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak to take a 7-0 lead with 3:36 left in the first quarter.
Miami evened the score at 7-7 with 27 seconds left in the half. Caiden Woullard blocked a Northwestern punt and Chris Cavalaris returned it seven yards to the Wildcats' eight-yard line. The visitors capitalized with a 12-yard slant pass from Smith to Mac Hippenhammer for the tying score.
The Wildcats re-took the lead with 8:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, driving 58 yards on 12 plays and finishing the possession with Cam Porter's two-yard touchdown run.
The RedHawks only needed three plays to respond. Mozee's 66-yard burst down the right sideline set up Smith's one-yard scoring run on the next snap to make it 14-14.
After the Miami defense forced a three-and-out, the Red and White marched 58 yards in 13 plays for the winning score, taking more than six minutes off the clock in the process. Mozee's 14-yard carry on 3rd-and-3 got the RedHawks into field goal range, and Nicholson gave Miami its first lead three plays later.
Ja'Von Kimpson recovered a Wildcat fumble with four seconds left to seal Miami's first victory over a Big Ten team since 2003 (also at Northwestern).

NOTES:

The RedHawks improved to 7-2 all-time in Evanston.
Woullard blocked the first punt of his career.
Miami held Northwestern to a season-low in points and kept running back Evan Hull to 72 all-purpose yards, less than half his previous average (203 yards per game).
Ryan McWood was credited with his first fumble recovery since September 2019.
Mozee's 66-yard run was the longest of his career.
