Miami falls to Akron, 4-3.
AKRON, Ohio - In a match befitting of two Mid-American Conference contenders, the Miami University women's tennis team narrowly fell to the Akron Zips 4-3 on the road Friday as the RedHawks began their conference campaign.
Miami falls to 3-10 (0-1 in the MAC) with the loss, while Akron improves to 16-3 (1-0 MAC). The two teams were picked third and second respectively in the conference preseason poll.
The RedHawks were able to claim the doubles point to kick things off. Emily Struble and Melati Devi took a 6-2 victory at third doubles, while Milana Lysova and Brindtha Ramasamy closed out the point and gave Miami the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win at first doubles.
The Zips would tie the match early into singles play as Akron's Uljanov claimed a win at third singles. However, Priyana Kalita put the RedHawks right back on top with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court four. Again, Akron would battle back, as Rita Pedroso and Miruna Vasilescu of the Zips claimed wins at second and fifth singles. This put Miami in a 3-2 hole and meant that Akron was a point away from clinching.
Despite Ramasamy's best efforts at first singles, the Zips would get that clinching point in a narrow three-set barn burner. After trading sets, Akron's Geier just barely clipped Ramasamy in a 7-6 final set and clinched the match. The RedHawks would get a consolation point at sixth singles, as Devi won in three sets over Akron's Rosas.
