Nine different RedHawks earned All-MAC honors, while
Brett Gabbert was named Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Tommy Doyle,
Doug Costin and
Kyle Kramer all earned first-team accolades. They were joined by
Kameron Butler (second team)
Maurice Thomas (second team – kick returner),
Sam Sloman (second team),
Danny Godlevske (third team),
Myles Reid (third team) and
Emmanuel Rugamba (third team).
Gabbert is just the third RedHawk to earn Freshman of the Year honors, joining Ben Roethlisberger (2001) and
Deland McCullough (1992). The St. Louis, Mo., native completed 139-of-258 passes for 1,967 yards and 10 touchdowns, while leading the Red and White to its first MAC Championship appearance since 2010. Gabbert, who started all 12 games for the RedHawks this season, had a career-high 260 yards passing in a win over Northern Illinois and 225 yards and three touchdowns in a win over BGSU.
Doyle started 11 games for the RedHawks at left tackle, helping Miami rush for 137.8 yards per game. Doyle was part of an offensive line that allowed just 25 sacks all season.
Costin, a second team All-MAC honoree in 2018, has 52 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks heading into the MAC Championship contest. The senior started all 12 games this year at defensive tackle and has started 36 straight games for the RedHawks. In his career, Costin has 171 tackles, 32.0 tackles for loss and 16 sacks.
This is Kramer's second straight year of All-MAC status after earning third-team accolades in 2018. Kramer ranks 31
st in the country with a 43.5 yard average and has downed 25 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line with just six touchbacks. Kramer has a career average of 42.0 yards per punt, which ranks second in school history.
Butler earned second team All-MAC this season after recording career-highs in tackles (39), tackles for loss (12.5) and sacks (5.0). His 12.5 tackles for loss rank fourth in the MAC. The sophomore had 2.0 sacks versus both Cincinnati and Akron this season.
All-MAC honors are nothing new for Thomas. The Oxford, Ohio, native earned third team honors in 2016 and first team honors in 2018. Both of those years he earned All-MAC status as a kick returner. In 2019, he earned second-team accolades as a punt returner, averaging 12.3 yards per return.
Sloman has had one of the best place kicker seasons in Miami football history. His 21 made field goals are the most in a single season in Miami history and his 84.0 field goal percentage ranks second behind only Nathan Parseghian (.870). The senior is 4-of-5 on field goals of at least 50 yards this year and has 46 touchbacks on 64 kickoffs.
Godlevske earned third team All-MAC for a second straight year, earning the same honor back in 2018. The three-time Rimington Award Watch List member started 11 games at center for the Red and White in 2019.
Reid started 11 games at linebacker this season, recording 70 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles. His highlight play of the season was recording a safety in the first quarter at Ohio State.
Rugamba recorded 71 tackles and a team-high seven pass breakups in his first year with the RedHawks. The junior had his first career interception at Western Michigan and had a career-high 11 tackles at Ball State.
Miami returns to action on Saturday when it plays Central Michigan for the MAC Championship at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. Opening kick is slated for noon and will be carried live on ESPN2.
