OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week, senior cross country David Coffey and junior midfielder Leonor Berlie are Miami's Athletes of the Week presented by Skyline Chili for the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3.
Coffey paced the RedHawks to a closely contested second-place finish at the MAC Championships over the weekend. Coffey took fifth in the 8K race, crossing the line in 25:35.2 and earning First-Team All-MAC honors in the process. This is the fourth-straight year that Coffey has earned All-MAC honors in cross country and his second top-five finish in the past three seasons.
This is the first time this season and second time in his career that Coffey has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Oct. 23-29, 2017.
Berlie closed the regular season with a five-point game on Saturday as Miami captured the MAC regular season championship with a 5-0 shutout of Central Michigan. Berlie scored two goals and added an assist in the win, notching her fourth multi-goal game of the past month. She scored the game-winning goal on a tremendous individual effort, entering the attacking 25 and then circle on her own to put Miami on the board. Berlie scored her second of the game off a cross pass and then had a ball deflected to give her an assist on the RedHawks final goal. Berlie leads the conference in goals (13), points (31), shots (98) and shots on goal (54) this season. She is 18th in the country in goals (13) and 21st in points per game (1.76).
This is the second time this season and in her career that Berlie has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced on Monday, Nov. 11.
