Miami Athletes of the Week Presented By Skyline Chili

OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week, junior swimmer Gordon Wheeler and senior middle hitter Margaret Payne are Miami's Athletes of the Week presented by Skyline Chili for the week of Oct. 14-20.
Wheeler led the Miami men to a team win at the Zip Classic last weekend with three meet records and four event wins. Wheeler has the fastest time in the MAC in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 fly this season, breaking the meet record in all three of these events at the Zip Classic. Nationally among DI swimmers, Wheeler ranks 20th in the 200 fly (1:48.69), 24th in the 500 free (4:29.42) and 44th in the 200 free (1:38.83). He also swam the fastest split of the event in the 800 free relay (1:39.09 for his 200 free) en route to a relay win. Wheeler also competed in the 400 medley relay and the 400 free relay this weekend.
This the first time this season and in his career that Wheeler has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week.
Payne had an incredible week in leading Miami to a pair of victories over Eastern and Central Michigan. She finished with 27 kills and a .317 attack percentage. She also scored at the net, recording 13 blocks (four solo and nine assisted), an average of 1.44 per set. Against EMU on Friday, Payne had 13 kills and four blocks. She followed that up with 14 kills and a season-high nine blocks against previously undefeated CMU. Payne scored an impressive 35.5 points in two matches, an average of 3.94 points per set.
This the second time this season and fourth time in her career that Payne has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced on Monday, Oct. 28.
