Tennis Drops Season Opener to Kentucky

RedHawks return to the courts Sunday at Louisville.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Kentucky Wildcats proved to be too much for the Miami University women's tennis team as it opened its season against the Southeastern Conference foe Friday. Kentucky took the 7-0 victory, marking the second straight season that the RedHawks fell to the Wildcats on opening day.

Miami drops to 0-1 on the young season, while UK improves to 3-0.

Kentucky would pick up the doubles point to start the match with wins at first and second doubles. Miami head coach Ricardo Rosas paired Miami's two talented freshmen, Brindtha Ramasamy and Jordan Ortega-Mendez, together at first doubles in the first collegiate match, but Kentucky's top pairing of seniors Justina Mikulskyte and Akvile Parazinskaite were too much to handle for the young RedHawks. At second doubles, sophomores Milana Lysova and Priyana Kalita reprised their pairing from last season but were defeated by Kentucky's Jacobs and Fiquet. Emily Struble and Lena Babunski were Miami's third doubles team.

The Wildcats would earn another clean sweep in the singles session. Ramasamy and Ortega-Mendez got the start at first and second singles respectively, but each fell in two sets. Ortega-Mendez, however, put up a good showing in the first set which saw her jump out to a quick 4-1 lead and eventually push UK's Parazinskaite to a tiebreak. On the third court, Struble did much the same as she put together several games in a row to start the set but was ultimately just barely clipped in a tiebreak by the Wildcats' Lesedi Jacobs. Lysova, Kalita, and Melati Devi rounded out the RedHawk lineup, but each fell in two sets as well.

The full list of results can be found below.
