The RedHawks at Penn made due with their situation - some were running for the second straight day, while others were running relays with more to come Saturday.
"It's really tough to run an open event on Thursday night and then come back to run a relay the next day," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Tom Chorny.
Despite the challenge, four RedHawks teamed up to post a solid performance in the women's 4x1500m. Running a very unconventional race for collegiate athletes, Elli Brady, Carly Davis, Maria Scavuzzo, and Alesha Vovk turned in an 18:23.11 to place ninth.
"Our girls fought hard to stay in the race," Chorny said. "At the Penn Relays, it's such a zoo that you rarely get a chance to stick to a normal routine."
Also competing out of routine was the four men's runners running the distance medley relay - an event the Mid-American Conference does not sponsor for outdoor. For this race, Chorny pieced together a squad that consisted of Mitchell Towne, Peter Cooke, Jonathan Fee, and Sean Torpy. While Chorny did not see it as a bad performance overall, the team ultimately fell behind. That was when Torpy, who was running the last leg, made a wise decision to coast through the finish in order to save himself for two more relays tomorrow.
At the Gina Relays, Miami had runners going in two distance races. On the men's side, Bradley Davis and David Coffey finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 5000m. Though neither PR'd, they still remain two of the four RedHawks that rank in the top-seven of the MAC 5000m performance list.
Megan Murphy highlighted the women's distance runners at Hillsdale. She set a 46-second personal record despite battling cold weather conditions.
In addition to continuing the Penn Relays on Saturday, Miami will also be hosting the RedHawk Invitational. Their second and final home meet of the season, it will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the hammer throw. Running events will be kicked off at 11:15 a.m. with the women's 5000m.
