Xavier Knocks Off Miami, 4-3

HAMILTON, Ohio - The Miami University women's tennis team fell to Xavier on Sunday in Hamilton by a score of 4-3. After winning doubles, the RedHawks were unable to make a foothold in the singles session of the match, with Xavier taking 4-of-6 for the victory. With the loss, Miami falls to 2-3 in dual play while the Musketeers improve to 3-3.
The match began with a tight doubles point that came down to the very last set. After Miami's Emily Struble and Milana Lysova blitzed through their match, Xavier came back with a win of their own. From there, it was down to the first doubles court, where the veteran duo of Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina earned a 7-5 win for the 'Hawks and claimed the first point of the match.
Singles matches, however, would prove to be less fruitful for Miami. The Musketeers quickly got a point back with a win on court five, but Ponomareva answered with a win at number one singles when she took down XU's Kyle 7-6, 6-2. This marks the fourth win in a row for the senior on the first court. After that, the flow of the match would start to sway in Xavier's favor, with the Musketeers winning in quick succession on courts four, six, and two to clinch the four points needed for the win.
Miami did get some consolation when Struble picked up a three-set victory over Xavier's Sophia Abelson. With all other matches completed and all eyes on her court, the Holt, Michigan native dominated the final tiebreak 10-4 to notch the victory.

The Red and White are back in action Saturday, Feb. 10 when the Memphis Tigers come to Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton for a 12:30 p.m. match. They follow that up with a trip to Richmond, Kentucky to play Eastern Kentucky on Sunday.
