OXFORD, Ohio – Fresh off the men's team winning its first Mid-American Conference team title in 20 years, the Miami University men's and women's cross country teams will turn their attention to Friday's NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet hosted by Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
The event will kick off Friday at ISU's LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course with the women's 6K at 11:15 a.m. The men will follow that up with the 10K race at 12:15 p.m.
The RedHawks will enter the regionals coming off a successful appearance at the MAC Championship. The Miami men took home the overall team championship, as juniors Christopher and
Sean Torpy landed All-MAC First Team honors and
Ryan Pitner,
Matt Bromley, and
David Coffey grabbed places on the Second-Team. Redshirt senior
Alesha Vovk was named First-Team on the women's side as the RedHawks finished third as a team, and head coach
Tom Chorny garnered a Coach of the Year nod.
The Red and White will look to build off this success at the regional, where the top-two finishing teams on both the men's and women's side will earn auto-bids to the NCAA National Championship on November 17 at Wisconsin. In addition, at-large bids for other teams and for individual runners whose team's don't qualify will also be in play.
Miami enters the meet with the seventh-ranked men's squad in the region and in the 30-team field, trailing only ranked foes Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Purdue, Indiana, and Michigan, as well as Michigan State. The RedHawk men are the highest-rated non-power conference team in the region. The women rank 11th in the Great Lakes region and will also be competing against five nationally ranked teams in Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Notre Dame.
