DAYTON, Ohio - The Miami University women's tennis team used a great doubles performance to win their first match of the 2017-18 dual season Friday when they took down Wright State, 4-3. The RedHawks are now 1-1 on the young season, while the Raiders fall to 0-3.
The 'Hawks earned the crucial doubles point to start the match as they swept all three matches. At first doubles, the senior duo of Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina breezed past Wright State's Haller/Morgan 6-1. Priyana Kalita and Milana Lysova won 6-2 on the second court, while Emily Struble and Melati Devi combined to knock off Pelayo/Whitney 6-3 at third position.
With this point in hand, Miami only needed to win three out of the six singles matches, and was able to do just that. Ponomareva led the way at first singles, grabbing a quick 7-5, 6-1 victory over Karoline Haller, and was followed by Devi at sixth position, who defeated WSU's Whitney 7-5, 7-5. Two Raider victories brought the match to 3-2, meaning Miami needed just one win from the remaining two matches to seal the victory. The RedHawks got exactly what they were looking for when Kalita continued her hot streak by taking down the Raiders' Luisa Pelayo in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.
