Women's Tennis Tallies Two Impressive Wins

HAMILTON, Ohio - Miami University's women's tennis team wrapped up a busy Sunday after a double-header where they topped Northern Kentucky University, 6-1, and blanked Ohio Northern, 7-0, moving its record to 3-6.
RedHawks Down the Norse
NKU entered today's match a player down due to injury. Miami swept the doubles competitions taking both the No. 1 and No. 2 flights to clinch the doubles point. Juniors Anastasiia Vasiukhina and Nelli Ponomareva topped Klara Skpac and Margita Sunjic in their flight, (6-2). The duo of sophomore Emily Struble and senior Andreea Badileanu defeated Sierra Nellessen and Katja Dijanezevic (6-2).
The RedHawks showed their stuff in the singles competition, only giving up one point at No. 1 in a battle of a match where Ponomareva fell to NKU's Sunjic, (7-5, 3-6, 10-2). Sophomore Anzhelika Shapovalova tallied a hard-earned win at No. 2 when she defeated Klara Skopac (6-4, 4-6, 10-3). Badileanu blanked her opponent, Dijanezevic, (6-0, 6-0).
Other notable wins came from Struble and Vasiukhina to solidify a victory for Miami. Struble took her opponent, Nellessen, in straight sets (6-1, 6-2). Vasiukhina handily defeated Yasmine Xantos in a quick, two-set match (6-0, 6-2).
Miami Blank the Polar Bears
The RedHawks returned later to defeat the Polar Bears, 7-0. The Red & White once again swept the doubles competition. Shapovalova and Brady took down Ola Latala and Mackenzie Wills, (6-0). Ponomareva and Vasiukhina defeated Lynn Kelly and Ashley Oschenhirt (6-0) and the pair of Badileanu and Struble won over Kaleigh Cummins and Brittany Toney (6-0).
In singles action, Ponomareva defeated Ashley Ochsenhirt, (6-0, 6-2). Abby Brady grabbed her first win of the season after she downed opponent Mackenzie Wills in straight sets, (6-1, 6-2) to solidify the 'Hawks blanking the Polar Bears. Shapovalova won her match after her opponent, Lynn Kelly, forfeited. Badileanu topped Ola Latala, (6-0, 6-1). Struble won over Cummins, (6-1, 6-0). Vasiukhina also defeated her opponent at No. 5, (6-1, 6-0).
The RedHawks are on the road next weekend when they will travel to Huntington, West Virginia to take on Winthrop University on Saturday and Marshall on Sunday.
