TAMPA, Fla. - The RedHawk baseball team opened their four-game series at South Florida with a 5-1 loss on Friday evening.
USF (4-1) got on the scoreboard first with single runs in the first and second innings. The Bulls would double their advantage in the home half of the third as an error cost the Red & White two runs. They tacked on one more in the sixth when a blooper found some green space and pushed the Bulls' lead to 5-0.
Miami (0-4) got its lone run of the game on a leadoff solo shot to deep center by Ross Haffey in the top of the eighth. The home run was his second of the young season.
RedHawk starting pitcher Cole Gnetz went 2.2 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits to go with two strikeouts and three walks. In relief, Shane Smith went 2.2 frames, surrendering one run on three hits while fanning two and walking just one. Finishing off the bullpen effort was Nick Ernst, who also went 2.2 innings, giving up just two hits while striking out four Bulls.
Miami and USF get back on the diamond Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
