CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference announced its weekly field hockey awards on Tuesday. Junior midfielder/forward Paula Portugal was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Portugal finished the season as the leading scorer in the MAC. During the game against Ball State on Sunday, she was a part of four goals, including scoring the game winner, as Miami won its sixth consecutive conference game to clinch an undefeated season. Portugal stole the ball at the 25 and took it in to score Miami's first goal. She set up Miami's second goal to push the RedHawks to a 2-0 lead and then scored Miami's fourth goal on a broken corner before helping Miami to a 6-1 halftime lead by setting up a goal just before halftime. On the other side of the ball, Portugal continued to disrupt Ball State's outlets and helped limit the Cardinals to only four shots in the game.
This is Portugal's third time this season and seventh in her career earning MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Miami travels to the MAC tournament at Kent State this weekend. The RedHawks take on Appalachian State in the semifinal game on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
