BERLIN, Germany -- The Miami University volleyball team spent its third day in Europe exploring the area of New Berlin. It was a full day of walking to several sites, along with a match against KSC Koepenick that night. For a full recap of the day's events, today's blog was written by junior outside hitter Maris Below and sophomore right side hitter Courtney Bemis. Above the blog you can see a video interview with the two, and below it there is some information on the Holocaust Memorial that the RedHawks visited this afternoon.

Today started with a great breakfast at our hotel. It was a buffet with a good selection of eggs, meat, pastries, fruit, and yogurt. Thank goodness because it needed to last us until a late lunch and get us through a lot of walking. Following breakfast, we embarked on a journey through "new Berlin" taking trains and trams along the way. We stopped at Checkpoint Charlie, which is the border between East and West Berlin. Some of the guards (dressed up like American guards) were kind enough to take funny photos with us. After, we took a walk to the large mall and business district, which eventually led us to the Holocaust memorial. It looked like a bunch of concrete blocks that appeared to be the same height, but as you walked through the maze, they became taller and taller. One of our guides said the point of this was to make you uncomfortable and have you looking around a lot, similar to the feeling of World War II not knowing what was around the corner and always needing to hide. There were a lot of beautiful old buildings with rich history that we passed by on our way to Alexanderplatz, which was another cool area with a shopping mall. Here we rested before another hike to a boat tour. The boat tour was awesome! We got to see the old and new parts of Berlin, a lot of the buildings being located on what is known as Museum Island.
The last part of the day included a great five-set match against one of the German pro teams. The competition was great and it was awesome to play against different people (other than ourselves). The team consisted of people ages 16-25! The game was followed by a sprint to the trams because we were late for dinner...and we were not about to miss dinner after five sets.
Thank you to all of the people who have helped us on our journey to Europe. We couldn't have done it without the donations, meals, and support! Special shout-outs to our alumni mentors Sandy Hart and Jill Powers!!

The RedHawks will spend their final day in Berlin on Friday visiting sites related to World War 2 and the Berlin Wall. Miami will have a rematch against KSC Koepenick in the evening followed by dinner with several students who are visiting the nearby Miami Luxembourg campus.
