OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week track and field senior Joe Stewart and tennis freshman Emily Struble are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of April 18-24.
Stewart posted a time of 14:04.40 to finish eighth in the 5000m at the Stanford Twilight on Friday. Stewart's time ranks second in the Mid-American Conference and pushes him in to eighth on Miami's top-10 list. Nationally, the senior from Naperville ranks 39th in the NCAA Division I East Region and 76th across all of Division I.
This is the fourth time this season and seventh time in his career that Stewart has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Nov. 9-15.
Struble posted a pair of wins at No. 5 singles last weekend to help Miami women's tennis to a share of its eighth-straight Mid-American Conference regular-season title and 23rd overall. Struble finished regular-season action with an impressive 28-7 singles record, including a perfect 8-0 mark in MAC play. Her 28 wins ties junior Andreea Badileanu for both the most singles victories by a Miami player in a single season and the most in program history by a freshman player. On Friday, Struble pounded out a 6-0, 6-2 win against Northern Illinois' Meghan Montgomerie to help Miami blank the Huskies, 7-0. She then downed Western Michigan's Meika Ashby, 6-1, 6-3 on Sunday to help the RedHawks seize a 5-2 against the Broncos.
This is the first time this season and in her career that Struble has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, May 2.
