Eastern Michigan Results
OXFORD, Ohio -- After dropping the doubles point, Miami University's women's tennis team rebounded with a singles sweep, leading to a 6-1 victory over Eastern Michigan University Sunday afternoon at the Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts. Miami (10-9, 5-1 MAC) returned to a winning record for the first time since February with the win over the Eagles (4-16, 1-6 MAC).
The doubles portion was difficult for Miami, as Eastern Michigan grabbed wins at the top two positions and led at No. 3 when play was halted. It was the first time Miami had lost a MAC doubles point since EMU took it in the 2014 MAC Women's Tennis Championship on April 27, 2014. At first-flight, junior Andreea Badileanu and freshman Anzhelika Shapovalova fell, 6-2, to Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova. The Eagles would then clinch the point with a 6-4 victory over senior Ana Rajkovic and sophomore Hannah Shteyn. The remaining match featuring sophomore Nelli Ponomareva and freshman Emily Struble was abandoned, with the pair trailing, 5-3, to Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva.
Ponomareva quickly started the Miami comeback in singles with her seventh-consecutive victory, a 6-3, 6-0 third-flight result over Ani Gogvadze. On her senior day, Rajkovic took down Sharma, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 6 position, followed by Badileanu's 6-4, 6-2 win at fourth-flight over Veleva. Shteyn clinched the match at 4-1 with a hard-fought 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Supejova, giving her the first No. 1 win of her career. Struble improved to 26-8 with a 6-3, 7-5 decision against Marie Mayerova. Finally, Shapovalova completed her own comeback win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, over Martinovska.
Miami concludes its regular season next weekend with a pair of road matches. On Friday, April 22, the RedHawks face Northern Illinois at 2 p.m., before a critical matchup with MAC co-leader Western Michigan on Sunday, April 24 at 1 p.m. The team returns to Oxford in two weeks for the 2016 MAC Women's Tennis Championship.
