Tennis Drops Home Opener to Xavier

HAMILTON, Ohio -- In a disappointing home opener, Miami University's women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Xavier University on Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Athletic Club. Despite competitive singles efforts, the RedHawks (1-3) were unable to overcome a doubles sweep and outstanding play by the Musketeers' (4-2) top players.
In doubles, Xavier quickly pulled out to an early 1-0 lead with victories in first (6-4) and second (6-1) flights. Despite the result, the veteran pair of senior Ana Rajkovic and junior Andreea Badileanu fought back to win their third-flight match, 7-5, over Sophia Abelson and Lauren Ghidotti. It was the third consecutive victory for the duo.
Badileanu was impressive in singles as well, giving Miami its lone point of the day with her 6-4, 6-2 victory over Amina Ismail in third-flight. The RedHawks competed strongly in singles as Rajkovic and sophomore Nelli Ponomareva forced their matches to deciding third sets, although neither was able to pull a victory.
The RedHawks will now set their sights toward a matchup with 56th-ranked Marshall on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. in Hamilton.
