HAMILTON, Ohio -- Miami University's women's tennis team moved to a winning record for the first time this season with a 7-0 victory over Wright State University Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Athletic Club. The RedHawks (5-4) overcame a tough doubles challenge from the Raiders (5-2) to sweep the singles portion in straight-sets on their way to a third consecutive win.
In doubles, Wright State went ahead with an early victory in third-flight, but Miami rebounded to take the final two contests. At second-flight, sophomore Hannah Shteyn and freshman Anzhelika Shapovalova topped Karoline Haller and Linsey Verstrepen, 6-4. The opening point was sealed with a 7-5 first-flight victory by sophomores Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina.
Miami quickly went up 2-0 after junior Andreea Badileanu's opponent retired with Badileanu leading 5-2 in the first set. Shteyn put aside an early deficit to cruise to a 6-4, 6-0 third-flight win against Elaine Cloern. The RedHawks clinched the match with Ponomareva's 6-1, 6-3 fourth-flight victory over Tori Turner. Shapovalova extended her winning streak to four with a 6-4, 6-2 result against Haller. In fifth-flight, freshman Emily Struble improved to 7-2 in dual play with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Vanessa Madrigal. Finally, sophomore Erin Rodriguez picked up her first victory of the season with a 6-4, 7-5 decision against Cloern.
