Tennis Tops Memphis, 5-2

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Miami University's women's tennis team overcame an early deficit to post a 5-2 victory over the University of Memphis Saturday afternoon at the University of Nebraska's Dillon Tennis Center. The RedHawks (3-4) completed their road trip by nearly sweeping the singles slate against the Tigers (1-6) in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
In doubles, the RedHawks dropped two of three matchups and quickly found themselves in a 1-0 disadvantage. Sophomore Hannah Shteyn and freshman Anzhelika Shapovalova picked up Miami's lone victory with a 6-1 second-flight result against Kathryn Hughes and Marta Morga, breaking a three-match losing streak for the pair.
Memphis' lead would be short-lived as Miami quickly gained a lead it would hold for the remainder of the match. In fifth-flight, freshman Emily Struble moved to 6-1 in dual play, topping Gabrielle Paul, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Anastasiia Vasiukhina earned her first regular season singles victory in sixth-flight with her 7-5, 6-2 result over Tara McElroy. Shapovalova (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) and Badileanu (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) put aside first set losses to grab wins at the top two flights against Hanna Sohn and Hughes. Finally in fourth-flight, Shteyn defeated Janina Berres in a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 contest.
The RedHawks travel to Lexington, Ky. to face Samford (3-4) on Saturday, Feb. 27 at noon at the University of Kentucky. They will return home the following day to host Wright State (4-1) at 4 p.m. at the Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton, Ohio.
