Dec. 22, 2016 OXFORD, Ohio - Thirty-seven Miami University student-athletes recorded a 4.0 GPA this fall as the RedHawks posted a collective 3.26 GPA for the semester.
Overall, 65.1 percent of the RedHawks' student-athletes across all sports put up at least a 3.0 GPA. Miami student-athletes have recorded a combined GPA above 3.0 every semester since the spring of 2011.
"It is an honor to work with coaches and student-athletes who value the dual role of student and athlete," said Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support Services Craig Bennett. "I am especially pleased to see that this semester we are successful both athletically and academically, this is what makes all the hard work more fun! Men's and women's basketball earned their best team GPA's in over 20 years and synchronized tied their all-time best. The guiding principle of Graduating Champions is evident everyday, our student athletes succeed because they know where they are going.
Team wise, Miami was led in the classroom by the tennis and women's basketball team's 3.66 GPA. Other RedHawk squads to post a 3.0 GPA or higher included the baseball (3.09), field hockey (3.32), golf (3.08), hockey (3.07), men's swimming & diving (3.02), men's track & field (3.18), men's cross country (3.36), soccer (3.43), softball (3.25), synchronized skating (3.53), volleyball (3.42), women's swimming & diving (3.32), women's track & field (3.45) and women's cross country (3.26) teams.
"It's amazing to see the buy-in of our student-athletes to Graduating Champions," Director of Athletics David Sayler said. "We've enjoyed an exciting fall and watched several teams turn the corner competitively and they've done all of that without sacrificing anything in their performance in the classroom. Craig and his staff have done excellent work helping our student-athletes perform at their best academically and the maturity of all of our student-athletes to balance their course work and sport demands is remarkable."
