OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week senior cross country runner Joe Stewart and sophomore midfielder Kat Zalar are Miami's Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 7-13.
In his senior debut, Joe Stewart led Miami to a fourth place team finish at the Bluegrass Invitational. Stewart led the Redhawks with a third-place time of 24:22.5 over the 8K, a mere second off his personal best time from the Mid-American Conference Championships from a year ago.
This is the first time this season and fourth time in his career that Stewart has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of May 11-17, 2015 (for outdoor track and field).
Zalar broke Miami's slump in a big way when she came off the bench to score a pair of goals in the second half against defending Conference USA champion Rice. The sophomore midfielder struck in the 52nd minute for her second goal of the year to give the Red and White a 1-0 lead as she slipped a low shot into the corner to open the scoring. Shortly after MU's defense withstood a barrage of Rice shots and set pieces, Zalar gave the RedHawks breathing room by finishing a pretty pass with a one-timer into the upper 90 in the 86th minute to put them in the win column for the first time since Aug. 23, snapping a three-match skid.
This is the first time this season and second time in her career that Zalar has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of Oct. 13-10. 2014.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, September 21.
