OXFORD, Ohio --The Miami University defense dominated most of practice, allowing just one score all morning during 11-on-11 drills. The team also competed in its first practice of the fall in full pads. Below are other observations from Monday.
- The defensive run fits were much better than the first few days, allowing very few big plays in the run game. They also played with more energy than I have seen all camp.
- Speaking of energy, we had our first team scuffle of fall camp. Nothing major, but things can get a bit heated inside Yager Stadium.
- On the defensive side of the ball I was impressed with defensive back Daryus Thompson's play. This is a student-athlete that struggled to find his way last fall, but has shown some major improvements. He is physical at first contact and gets out of his breaks well. During a red zone period Rokeem Williams beat him inside for a score, but Thompson learned from his mistake and shut that opportunity down in his next rep.
- Chris Hudson and Jared Murphy had strong red zone showings today. Hudson continues to jump and muscle his way around, while Murphy is very shifty and tough to slow down. Two unique styles that really work.
- Best part of practice today were the 3-on-3 drills. Three offensive players try to block three defensive players in a small four-yard space. Just a lot of fun to watch.
- Freshman Maurice Thomas made a few nice moves in the 3-on-3 drill to score some points for the offense.
- The team practiced several third down situations today. Whether it was third-and-1 or third-and-7, the offense tried to extend the drive, while the defense attempted to get off the field.
- Sam Martin had the lone touchdown, scoring on a 16-yard jump ball.
- JT Jones had another sack on Monday. He seems to make a few plays each day that are game changers.
