RedHawks Split Doubleheader with Kent State

OXFORD, Ohio – In a pair of pitcher’s duels, the RedHawks (9-31, 7-11 MAC) earned a split in Sunday’s doubleheader against Kent State at McKie Field at Hayden Park, falling 1-0 in game one before earning a 2-0 victory in game two.
Game One: Kent State 1, Miami 0
The only run of the game came in the first inning, courtesy of the Golden Flashes. A Tommy Monnot fielder’s choice scored Sawyer Pollen.
Miami starter Jacob Banks (2-7) was stellar despite taking the loss, tossing eight and a third innings, while giving up just four hits and the one earned run. He walked three and struck out four. Akron starter Eric Lauer earned the complete game shutout.
Game Two: Miami 2, Kent State
The series finale saw another tight contest and only one half inning of scoring. The only runs of the game came courtesy of back-to-back solo home runs by Adam Yacek and Max Andresen in the bottom of the seventh inning. Yacek’s home run was has team-leading fifth of the season, while Andresen earned his first of the year.
Miami starter Ryan Powers (4-7) was lights out for the RedHawks. He went the distance, earning his first career complete game. He allowed six hits, walking just one and striking out eight.
The RedHawks return to action Tuesday as they begin a home-and-home series with Eastern Kentucky on the road. Then, Miami will host Eastern Michigan this weekend for an important Mid-American Conference matchup.
