RedHawks Fall On Walk-off Single in Extras

DAYTON, Ohio – The RedHawks (8-29, 6-9 MAC) went to extra innings for the second game in a row but found themselves on the opposite side of fate, falling to Wright State, 8-7, in 11 innings. On Sunday, the RedHawks earned a thrilling 13-inning victory over Akron.
Wright State got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. Mitch Roman led off the inning by reaching on an error. Then, Mark Fowler doubled to left center, scoring Roman. The next at-bat, Michael Timm reached on a throwing error and Fowler scored on the play. Through one inning of play, Wright State held a 2-0 lead.
The RedHawks fired back in the top of the second. Spencer Dull and Steve Sada led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Then, Gary Russo belted his second home run of the season, putting Miami ahead, 3-2. The Raiders reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the second. Roman knocked a double down the left field line, pushing across two runs. Wright State took a 4-3 in to the top of the third.
Miami responded again in the top of the third. Jake Romano led off the inning with a walk. Then, after a fly out, Kendall Johnson doubled to right center, allowing Romano to score and tie the game at four apiece. In the bottom of the third, for the third-straight inning, Wright State put runs on the board. A Ryan Fucci two-run home run gave the advantage back to the Raiders, 6-4. Wright State extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth. A Fowler single widened the Raider lead, 7-4.
Miami came out determined in the top of the seventh. Ryan Elble, Romano and Adam Yacek led off the inning with three-straight singles, loading the bases. Then, Johnson grounded into a double play but Elble was able to score on the play. That was followed up by an RBI single to left field by Spencer Dull. Romano scored on the play. Then, back-to-back singles by Sada and Russo brought Dull around to score, knotting the game at seven apiece through six and a half innings of play.
No more scoring occurred until the bottom of the 11th inning when Mark Fowler hit a two-out, walk-off single to left center to claim an 8-7 victory for Wright State.
The RedHawks return to action this weekend as they host Kent State in a critical MAC East matchup. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
