COLUMBIA, S.C. – The RedHawks (2-8, 0-0 MAC) found some offense Sunday against South Carolina but fell in a tightly-contested matchup, 5-3. Steve Sada led the RedHawks with two hits and one run.
Miami notched their first two runs of the game and the weekend in the top of the fifth inning. It all started with back-to-back two-out singles by Jake Romano and Steve Sada. Chad Sedio then reached on a dropped third strike to load the bases. The next at-bat, Matt Honchel hit a routine groundball to the second baseman but he was unable to handle it and Honchel reached on an error. Romano scored on the play. A wild pitch the next at-bat scored Sada. The RedHawks came out of their half of the inning with a 2-0 lead.
The lead did not last long though as four straight two-out walks by RedHawk pitchers evened up the game at 2-2. A wild pitch on the next at-bat scored another run and South Carolina exited the fifth inning with a 3-2 lead.
The Gamecocks extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. A bases loaded balk brought in their fourth run of the game and a sac fly brought the lead to 5-2 through seven. Miami got a run back in the top of the eighth on a Jacob Wolf sac fly that scored Honchel, making it 5-3 in favor of South Carolina after seven and a half innings. That would be the last scoring of the game for either team as South Carolina closed out the game.
The Red & White return to action Tuesday at Ball State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The RedHawks will then head to East Tennessee State for a three-game series this upcoming weekend.
