OXFORD, Ohio – The RedHawks (4-19, 2-4 MAC) belted two home runs on Sunday, but came up just short again in their series finale against Central Michigan (18-10, 5-1 MAC). Ryan Marske (L, 0-2) was the pitcher of record for the Red & White.
Miami got the scoring started in the top of the first. Ryan Elble singled to lead things off, followed by Steve Sada, who reached base on an error. Elble made it to third on the error and eventually scored on a Matt Honchel groundout. The RedHawks held a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
No more scoring took place until the top of the fourth. This time it was the Chippewas getting on the scoreboard. An RBI single knotted things up at 1-1. However, Miami responded in the bottom half of the inning on a solo shot from Adam Yacek. The homerun was his second of the season.
The fifth inning saw both offenses explode. A sac fly, a two-run single and a throwing error allowed the Chippewas to plate four runs in top half of the frame. Down 5-2 after CMU’s offensive outburst, Miami responded with some runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Gary Russo led things off with a solo home run, his first of the year and the team’s second of the afternoon. Back-to-back singles by Max Andresen and Kendall Johnson and a sac bunt by Ryan Elble put Red & White runners on second and third with just one out. Then, Sada grounded out but Andresen was able to score on the play. The next at-bat, Honchel hit a single that scored Johnson. Chad Sedio then doubled to left center, allowing Honchel to score all the way from first base. The ‘Hawks took a 6-5 lead into the sixth inning.
However, a three-run top of the sixth put the Chippewas in front, 8-6. Their runs came on a one-run single and a two-run double.
Miami could not respond in the bottom half of the sixth, but did cut in to the lead in the bottom half of the seventh. Jacob Wolf scored on a sac fly by Honchel. The RBI was Honchel’s third of the day.
No more scoring would occur as the Chippewas held on once again, defeating Miami 8-7 and earning themselves another one-run victory over the Red & White.
The RedHawks return to action this Tuesday as they travel to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Louisville Cardinals in a one-game matchup. On Wednesday, the ‘Hawks return home to host the Thundering Herd of Marshall. First pitch for that game is set for 6 p.m.
