JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The RedHawks (2-12, 0-0 MAC) put up a big fight, scoring five runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie up the game, but ultimately fell to East Tennessee State on a walk off single, 11-10 Sunday.
The RedHawks scored in the first inning for the second-straight game. A two-out double by Matt Honchel kept the inning alive, then Jacob Wolf earned a walk to put runners on first and second. Adam Yacek singled and brought Honchel around to score and advanced Wolf to third. A passed ball allowed Wolf to score the next at-bat, putting Miami up 2-0.
ETSU responded in their half of the inning, scoring on a two-out double. After a hit by pitch put a second runner on base, the Bucs hit their third double of the inning and scored two more runs. The ETSU lead stood at 3-2 after one. The second inning saw more of the same for ETSU, scoring three more runs on two doubles. The Bucs lead was 6-2 after two innings.
When it seemed like ETSU was about to run away with the game, Adam Yacek hit a three-run home run in the top of the third after Sedio doubled and Wolf singled. The homer was the first of his career and cut the ETSU lead to 6-5. The Bucs responded with a home run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a solo shot to left center, making it 7-5 in favor of ETSU.
Another double in the bottom of the eighth added two insurance runs for the Bucs. Before the inning was over, they were able to add another run on an RBI single. The Bucs took a 10-5 lead into the top of the ninth. Chad Sedio helped the RedHawks chip away at the lead with a two-run home run, his second homer of the series and season. Then, the RedHawks were able to get the bases loaded with two outs. Scott Slappey came into the game as a pinch hitter and he hit a bases-clearing double to tie it up, 10-10.
As has been the case throughout the series, the Bucs responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring the winning run on a walk-off single.
The RedHawks return to action Tuesday to begin a home and home with Xavier. The Red & White will host the Musketeers in the team’s home opener Wednesday at 6 p.m.
