MUNCIE, Ind. – Miami had their chances but came up short in Tuesday’s game against Ball State, falling 4-0. Chris Ticherich (L, 0-1) made his first career start on the mound for the RedHawks. Spencer Dull made his first career start behind the plate.
Miami threatened early, getting the bases loaded in two of the first three innings. In the one in which they did not load them up, they had two runners on. They left seven runners on base through three innings, but were creating promising chances.
In the midst of Miami’s flurry of baserunners, Ball State’s Jarett Rindfleisch hit a solo shot to lead of the second inning. The Cardinals lead 1-0 after two frames.
Miami got two runners on again in the top of the fourth, but could not convert. The RedHawks left nine on base through four innings. Still, a sign that they were getting their chances.
Ball State got runners on the corners in the bottom of the fourth. A sac fly by Ball State’s Plesac scored Rindfleisch, putting the Cardinals up 2-0 through four innings.
In the top of the fifth, senior Matt Honchel hit a single, marking the seventh time this season he has had a multi-hit game. He has also reached base safely in each of Miami’s 11 games this season. In the bottom half of the fifth, Ball State extended their lead on a Rindfleisch groundout that scored a runner from third. Ball State’s lead stood at 3-0 through five.
Another Cardinal sac fly put them up 4-0. It was Rindfleisch again, earning his third run batted in. That was the end of the scoring of the day.
The RedHawks return to the diamond Friday at East Tennessee State to start a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:05 p.m.
