OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week senior hockey forward Cody Murphy and women’s swimming and diving freshman Holly Schuster are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Jan. 19-25.
Murphy provided exactly what the RedHawks needed to snap their three-game losing streak against Denver on Saturday night. The senior forward contributed to all four Miami goals, netting two goals and dishing out two assists in a 4-1 victory. After helping set up Anthony Louis in the first period to put Miami on the board, Murphy's wrister beat DU goalie Tanner Jaillet far side with 6:34 remaining in the middle stanza. With Miami nursing a 2-1 lead late in the third, Murphy struck again to add an insurance goal with 4:22 left before starting a transition rush that led to Blake Coleman's put away empty net tally with 2:40 remaining. The four points were a career high for Murphy and upped his season line to 17 points on 10 goals and seven assists.
This is the second time this season and second time in his career that Murphy has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Dec. 1-7.
Schuster won two individual events on the day. She swam a time of 2:23.63 in the 200-yard breaststroke to earn first place, coming in 2.03 seconds before the second-place Miami finisher and 5.16 seconds before the first Ball State swimmer touched the wall. Schuster also tied junior Aubrey Kluth for first place in the 200-yard IM. The pair both clocked in at 2:09.45. The pair finished 3.12 seconds before the next swimmer. She was also a part of the second-place finishing 200-yard medley relay team, which finished in 1:49.09, only finishing 1.60 seconds behind one of the other RedHawk relay teams. Schuster also finished in third in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking in at 2:09.04.
This is the first time in her career that Schuster has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor.
