OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week men’s basketball senior guard Will Sullivan and women’s swimming and diving sophomore Stephanie LeMire are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Jan. 5-11.
Sullivan averaged 19.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg as Miami opened MAC play last week. Sullivan poured in a season-high-tying 21 points off 8-of-11 shooting in a hard-fought game against Buffalo. His eight field goals were a career high as he shot 72.7 percent from the field, including 62.5 percent from 3-point range (5-of-8) against the Bulls. It was the fifth 20-point effort of his career and second this season. Sullivan recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds as Miami completed an unbelievable comeback against Eastern Michigan, erasing a 25-point deficit to earn an 82-81 overtime win against the Eagles. Sullivan spearheaded Miami’s efforts on the boards as the RedHawks out-rebounded one of the nation’s top rebounding teams, 38-28, and Miami posted its largest margin on the glass this season. Sullivan’s 12 boards are the most by a RedHawk this season. He was 5-of-6 (.833) from the field against the Eagles, including 3-of-4 (.750) from 3-point range and hit all four of his free throws. For the week, Sullivan shot a scorching 76.5 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from beyond the arc.
This is the first time this season and third time in his career that Sullivan has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2014.
LeMire had another big day as Miami defeated Cincinnati, 188-111. She won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.62. She finished 1.47 seconds in front of a second-place Miami finisher and 2.38 seconds before the first Cincinnati swimmer touched the wall. LeMire also swam a 2:18.74 in the 200-yard breaststroke, earning her another first-place finish. She finished 4.61 seconds before the second-place Cincinnati swimmer. LeMire also competed in the winning 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:46.78.
This is the first time this season and second time in her career that LeMire has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor. She also won it for the week of Oct. 21-27, 2013.
