Hall of Famer Nobby Wirkowski Passes Away

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario –Miami University Hall of Fame quarterback Norbert “Nobby” Wirkowski (’51) passed away Thursday at the age of 88.
Wirkowski lettered from 1948-50. He took over the starting role in 1950 and led Miami to a 9-1 record and the Mid-American Conference Championship. He then led the Red and White to a 54-21 win over Arizona State in the Salad Bowl. In that same year, Wirkowski completed 69 of 135 passes for 1,235 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Wirkowski went on to play 10 years in the Canadian Football League, where he led the 1952 Toronto Argonauts to the Grey Cup. He also served as Toronto’s head coach from 1962-64 and went on to serve as an administrator (the Canadian equivalent of Athletic Director) of York University from 1967-92.
Wirkowski was inducted into Miami’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987.
