MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Senior Kelley Miller and junior Layne Baggett each won individual Mid-American Conference titles Saturday to lead the Miami University women's track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Central Michigan at Lyle Bennett Track.
The RedHawks ended with 82 points at the three-day meet while Kent State took home the title with 134.33 points. Toledo was second with 132 points while Western Michigan placed third with 108 points. Behind Miami were Eastern Michigan (78.33), Buffalo (72) and Akron (68.5) in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Ball State, Ohio and Bowling Green rounded out the final team standings in spots eight through 12.
Miller (Dublin, Ohio) captured the 1500m title for the second time in her career (2010) as she clocked 4:24.08, which is the second-fastest time in school history behind her own school record. She won by over two seconds and earned 10 points for Miami in doing so.
Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won her individual title by repeating in the 100m hurdles in a personal-best 13.56, which is the ninth-best time in school history and ranks her second at Miami. Redshirt sophomore Ashley Zaper (Whitehouse, Ohio) grabbed sixth in 14.24 as the two totaled 13 points. Just 20 minutes after running the 100m hurdles final, Baggett competed in the 100m dash final and placed sixth in 11.98 to earn another three points for the Red and White.
Senior Rachael Clay (Rossford, Ohio) placed fifth in the 400m dash in 54.55, which is the eighth-best time in school history, while she earned four points for the team.
Miami placed sixth in the 4x400m relay, anchored by Clay, in 3:48.44 for three points while the RedHawks were seventh in the 4x100m relay in 46.62, paced by Baggett and Clay, for another two points.
In the pole vault, two RedHawks combined for seven points as sophomore Kori Tatman (Amanda, Ohio) took fourth and senior Hannah Tabler (Wapakoneta, Ohio) finished seventh. Tatman cleared a personal-best 3.77m/12-4.5, which puts her in sole possession of third in school history, while Tabler topped 3.67m/12-0.5. Senior Sarah Kinnaman (Carmel, Ind.) just missed scoring, as she took ninth, also vaulting 3.67m/12-0.5 but in more attempts.
Senior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio), who was the runner-up in the shot put Friday, earned fourth in the discus for five points with a heave of 47.38m/155-5. Sophomore Erica Mudd (Cincinnati, Ohio) added another two points by placing seventh in the high jump with a season-best-tying leap of 1.67m/5-5.75.
Senior Jillian Dickman (Madison, Ohio) just missed scoring in her final race as a RedHawk as she took ninth in the 5000m run in a season-best 17:28.20. Classmate Krista Stillson (Naperville, Ill.) concluded her career with a season-best leap in the triple jump, as she logged a jump of 11.42m/37-5.75 to claim 11th.
By winning an event, Baggett and Miller each received First-Team All-MAC honors, Baggett for the second straight year in the 100m hurdles and Miller for the third time in her career, winning the 1500m run in 2010 and the mile run indoors in 2010. Roberts and Zaper each garnered Second-Team All-MAC honors as Roberts was the runner-up in the shot put, earning the accolade for the fourth time in her career (indoor and outdoor shot put each of last two years), while Zaper was second in the heptathlon.
The MAC Championships is Miami's final meet as a team this year, however several individual RedHawks are in contention to earn a spot in the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds May 24-26 in Jacksonville, Fla. To qualify, an athlete must be in the top 48 in their respective event in the East Region. The field for the East Prelims will be announced Thursday, May 17.
