Miami Men Sit in Fifth at MAC Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Five different RedHawks scored points Thursday at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Central Michigan, while the Miami University men's track and field team is in fifth place after day one.
Miami totaled 18 points after four events while Akron rests in first with 36 points. The host Chippewas and Eastern Michigan each have 29 points to tie for second while Kent State is fourth with 28 points. Buffalo is in sixth behind the `Hawks with 16 points.
The RedHawks picked up eight points in the pole vault as senior Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) took fourth, clearing 4.93m/16-2 while junior Sam Wildeman (Naperville, Ill.) claimed sixth with a vault of 4.78m/15-8.25.
In the 10,000m run, junior Matt Marol (Evanston, Ill.) and sophomore Dave Wing (Naperville, Ill.) combined to earn seven points as Marol was fifth in 31:28.00 while Wing was right behind in sixth in 31:30.05.
Miami grabbed another three points in the javelin, led by a seventh-place showing from Rudin after a throw of 52.31m/171-7. Rudin totaled seven of Miami's 18 points on the day in his two events while also competing in the first five events of the decathlon. Sophomore Taylor Celestin (Mason, Ohio) was right behind Rudin in eighth with a toss of 51.07m/167-6.
At the midway point of the decathlon (through five events), senior Jordan Goffena (Sidney, Ohio) rests in second with 3,711 points while Akron's Bryan Jones is first with 3,848 points. Goffena posted a wind-aided personal-best in the 100m dash (11.00) to take second in the race and was also second in the shot put while he won the 400m dash in 49.85.
Freshman Sam Chester (Medina, Ohio) sits in third in the decathlon right behind Goffena with 3,640 points paced by his win in the 100m dash in a wind-aided personal-best 10.94 and a runner-up finish in the 400m dash (51.59). He also had personal bests in the shot put (11.95m/39-2.5) to place third and in the long jump (6.84m/22-5.25) to take fourth. Rudin is seventh halfway through the decathlon with 3,347 points.
In the hammer throw, the `Hawks just missed scoring as sophomore Rob Stein (Villa Park, Ill.) was ninth with a heave of 52.81m/173-3 while senior Adam Ruiz (Mascoutah, Ill.) finished 10th (52.73m/173-0).
The MAC Championships resume Friday at 11 a.m. with the 110m hurdles portion of the decathlon as the final five events are contested throughout the day. Several prelims on the track as well as some field events will also take place.
