Miami Men Win Six Events at RedHawk Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio - Six different RedHawks were victorious Saturday while the Miami University men's track and field team dominated the throws events at its own RedHawk Invitational, held at George Rider Track, as the meet was Miami's third and final home meet of the year. The start of the meet was delayed by an hour and a half due to inclement weather while the meet was run under cool and gloomy skies.
Senior Adam Ruiz (Mascoutah, Ill.) won the hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 57.98m/190-3, which ranks him fifth in school history. Sophomore Rob Stein (Villa Park, Ill.) earned third with a toss of 48.70m/159-9 while junior Lucas Ferguson (Mount Vernon, Ohio) was fourth, throwing 48.66m/159-8 in his first hammer throw of the year.
In the discus, Miami claimed the top four spots led by senior Nathan Hoch (Logan, Ohio) with a heave of 50.92m/167-1. Ruiz took second with a personal-best throw of 50.74m/166-6 while Stein was third (49.84m/163-6). Ferguson was also fourth in the discus with a toss of 44.60m/146-4.
In the shot put, Stein was the runner-up with a toss of 16.04m/52-7.5 while Ruiz was third with a toss of 16.00m/52-6 and Hoch was fifth (15.48m/50-9.5).
Miami captured the top two spots in the 200m dash as sophomore Jahquil Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) won in 22.35 while classmate Robert Balzano (Poland, Ohio) was right behind in second in 23.11 in his first 200m dash.
Freshman Skyler Coburn (La Porte, Ind.) won the 400m dash in a personal-best 50.39 while junior Alex Trent (Middletown, Ohio) was fourth in 53.03.
Sophomore Matt Gambill (Dover, N.H.) placed first in the high jump with a leap of 1.98m/6-6 while classmate Taylor Celestin (Mason, Ohio) was also victorious, doing so in the javelin with a throw of 52.86m/173-5.
In the 1500m run, the RedHawks earned places third through fifth, paced by senior Brian Gallagher (Westlake, Ohio) in 4:02.67. Sophomore Wade Coffin (Willoughby, Ohio) was fourth in 4:04.68 while classmate Daniel Garleb (Pickerington, Ohio) took fifth in 4:07.05.
Freshman Sam Chester (Medina, Ohio) crossed in second in the 110m hurdles in 15.04. Another runner-up finish was put in by junior Sam Wildeman (Naperville, Ill.) in the pole vault, as he cleared 4.70m/15-5.
Senior Jordan Goffena (Sidney, Ohio) claimed third in the long jump with a leap of 6.94m/22-9.25 while former RedHawk Josh Rees was the runner-up, competing unattached, with a jump of 7.10m/23-3.5.
Freshman James Kraus (Maumee, Ohio) placed third in the 3K steeplechase in 10:15.32.
Miami has one final tune-up before the Mid-American Conference Championships as the RedHawks compete at the Billy Hayes Invitational, hosted by Indiana University, Friday, May 4 in Bloomington, Ind.
